Macque Bohleen, Clerk and Recorder, Subject of Criminal Investigation Over 2022 Election Handling That Could Lead to Felony Charges and County Attorney Alex Nixon, Sheriff McQuillan and County Commissioner Scott Miller are all involved.
Strict adherence to the law is essential to running Carbon County and maintaining trust in our local elections. Carbon County voters deserve complete confidence that every ballot is properly handled, every record is fully preserved, and election administration remains above reproach.
The Montana Commissioner of Political Practices (COPP) is currently reviewing a formal complaint involving Carbon County Clerk and Recorder Macque Bohleen and Election Administrator Crystal Roascio concerning the handling of election materials during the 2022 election.
The Allegations Under Review
The complaint centers on two primary concerns regarding election integrity and record preservation:
Shredding of Election Materials: Security footage from election night allegedly shows Election Administrator Crystal Roascio shredding more than 100 pages of paper in multiple batches after polls closed on election night on Nov 8, 2022.
Incomplete Tabulator Records: Documentation for a DS-200 tabulator machine appears to be missing its startup portion—specifically the record proving the machine was tested, zeroed, and cleared before live ballots were counted. Without this zero-count log, the public cannot independently confirm from that file alone that the machine started at zero votes. Attached are the copies of the tabulator tapes and a regression analysis done on the total number of undervotes recorded by each machine. An undervote is when you leave a race or ballot question unvoted (basically skipped voting that issue or race). Voters in Carbon County suspect that Clerk and Recorder Macque Bohleen sorted through voted ballots looking for ballots where her race was undervoted and she then filled in the oval for voters in her favor. That is one possible reason why the one tabulator with the missing startup had an impossibly lower amount of undervotes on it. It is also possible the tabulator was preloaded with votes, but not undervotes. The third possibility is some combination of preloaded votes and filling in undervotes occurred. See attached regression analysis for details.
Why This Matters to Carbon County Voters
Macque Bohleen served as Clerk and Recorder with oversight over election operations while simultaneously running as a candidate on that same 2022 ballot. She won her race by just 87 votes.
When an election is decided by such a thin margin, complete transparency and strict compliance with record-preservation laws are critical. Voters must be able to trust the paper trail and know that election oversight is completely independent, regardless of who is on the ballot. Macque Bohleen and County Attorney Alex Nixon have consistently withheld or delayed answers, instead of being straightforward and transparent. They have also stated that multiple agencies had investigated and "exonerated" all parties in Carbon County. However, neither DCI nor the FBI have made their investigations public. A formal public records request to both agencies was submitted and neither DCI (through the Montana Attorney General's Office) nor the FBI will release any files, claiming confidentiality. The Bennetts claim what is confidential is that neither investigated or were allowed to investigate, and just like the FBI investigation into voter fraud in MI the investigation was closed prematurely instead of investigated (

Until DCI and the FBI release their records, neither the Bennetts nor Alex Nixon can claim they know for certain. Therefore, it is disingenuous for Carbon County Attorney Alex Nixon to state the matter was thoroughly investigated. He would need to provide the full investigation file to be able to claim such a thing, and the Bennetts claim he doesn't have access to either the DCI or FBI files to be able to allege such a thing. The Bennetts claim the matter hasn't been investigated by any agency and was simply swept under the rug, and they challenge Alex Nixon and anyone else who "claims" otherwise to prove it by providing the "goods" and showing us the investigation files. Without those files, it is just as plausible that Carbon County went the way of Antrim County MI.
Looking Ahead
These allegations highlight why local government oversight is so important to Carbon County residents. Citizens have a right to full transparency regarding whether election records were improperly handled or destroyed, whether machine startup protocols were documented correctly, and what steps will be taken to ensure future Carbon County elections are run with absolute integrity. Macque Bohleen has not been forthcoming or transparent, and the Bennetts claim she has not been honest either. Is this who we want running our election? The Bennetts say NO. Vote out Macque Bohleen the current County Clerk and Recorder, Sheriff McQuillan, County Attorney Alex Nixon, County Commissioner Scott Miller, and don't vote for the other Miller either.
We need to vote out the corruption and get a fresh slate of elected officials.
